Service learning is a cornerstone of the St. Luke’s experience. Our commitment to promote lifelong service in our students is embedded in our mission, the St. Luke’s Way, and our Portrait of a Graduate.
School-initiated outreach opportunities ranging from serving meals at the Good Samaritan Community Services to singing at local nursing homes are designed to expose students to the many forms that service can take. Meanwhile, opportunities for leadership through service abound within the walls of St. Luke’s, such as mentoring a younger student, acolyting in chapel, or welcoming families to school events.
In recent years, St. Luke’s middle level students have brought our service learning to new heights by logging hundreds of hours toward the school’s projects for the Spurs Silver and Black Give Back Foundation’s “Team Up Challenge.” St. Luke’s was chosen as a finalist in the competition for two out of the past three years and was awarded grants to continue the projects. Last year's project addressed hunger and helped people in food-insecure families here in San Antonio. Our students packed weekend snack bags for children, helped serve lunch to senior citizens at Good Samaritan, and spearheaded a drive that amassed almost 5,000 non-perishable food items to restock a local food pantry.
